Choosing The Right Crane

The appropriately sized crane is essential for a successful lift. Review our top six tips to remember when ordering a crane.

▢ Check Your Load Weight

What are we lifting and what is the weight?

Naturally, you need a crane with a suitable lifiting capacity to move the load. If you use a high-capacity crane for a small load, you will likely end up wasting time, labor, and money.

▢ Determine Your Lift Height

What is the height we need to clear?

The length of the crane's boom you'll need will be determined by the height the load needs to be lifted, as well as the specific requirements of the job, such as reach and stability. The greater the height, the longer the boom will likely need to be in order to safely and efficiently lift the load to the desired position.

▢ Measure The Horizontal Distance

How far in on the structure does the load need to go? Are we lifting from a delivery vehicle and going to the roof?

Take a measurement starting from the center point of where the load is intended to be placed, extending all the way to the outer edge of the building. This ensures an accurate calculation of the distance for proper planning and equipment setup.

▢ Jobsite Conditions

How far away will the crane be set-up from the building? Are there any trees or power lines that may interfere with the set-up of the crane? Is the area wide enough for the crane? What are the ground conditions on the jobsite?

▢ Permitting

Will the crane be set-up on a street? 

If so, partial or full closures may be needed depending on your particular job specifications. Our team can assist with submitting for these permits with the City of Chicago or other local municipalities.

▢ Special Considerations

Does your load require any special riggin (spreader beams, specific shackles or chain)? Are there any underground utilities, power lines, or sewers? Is any part of the jobsite near or located on vaulted sidewalks?
